Superintendent Healdton Public Schools

I have been in Public Education for the past 23 years. I was born and raised in Healdton and both my wife and I Graduated here in 1991. I was “Blessed” with the opportunity to come back to my Home Town in 2012. I was raised hearing our alumni say, “Once A Bulldog – Always A Bulldog,” and now it makes perfect sense. I am HOME…

The opportunity and responsibility that I have been given to be home and guide the students at Healdton Public School into the future is one that I take very seriously. In order to move forward I felt that the students needed to feel safe in all aspects of their educational process. In order to do so I needed to find a way to protect them from both intruders and natural disasters. So I set out to investigate how? Enter Danni Legg, also a former Healdton Student, who lost her son in 2013 in the devastating Tornado in Moore, Oklahoma. Danni became an advocate for “Shelter In Place” and called me on the phone and explained to me that she had received a call from a gentleman in Cedar City, Utah that had a solution for us and wanted us to all get together. A few days later in my office walks Mr. James Haslem, Owner of TOTE Int. LLC, and Danni Legg. What a presentation is was!! To see a practical and financial answer to address both of my concerns as Superintendent to protect ALL of my students and ALL of my faculty — WOW!! I was hooked. This was financially a better solution than trying to build a “Super Structure Gymnasium” that my District could not afford and it would take too long to get everyone safely into.

So it was time to go to work to get them installed. To do so, we passed a bond issue in February 2015 to pay for (6) units and I ran the OKC Marathon on April 26, 2015 to pay for the (7th) unit. To be able to run a marathon to protect my students and staff — that was all the motivation I needed. What a day it was!! Our first (7) units were installed in our Elementary in August of 2015. The sense of security and well being that it has given our students, staff and parents in incredible. Living in “Tornado Alley” and concerns about an “Intruder” on campus is GONE. The concern of “Is my child safe at school?” is GONE. My parents and staff do not have to worry about what to do and who to protect? They are ALL going to be safe and protected within (35) seconds. By eliminating this concern my teachers can teach and my students can learn in a worry free environment.

We then installed (2) larger units in my Middle School in May 2018. Again — the sense of security is amazing. To know that I will not have to be the Superintendent that has to call a parent(s) and say “I am sorry to inform you that your child was injured or lost his/her life due to a natural disaster or intruder on campus” is an amazing feeling. Although I understand that nothing can 100% protect everyone – this is definitely the best product and viable option out there.

My goal is now to get (2) more large units installed on my High School Campus to have ALL students and faculty protected. I started with the Elementary because they are my youngest students and can not truly understand the relevance of the situation. By having the Units in the classrooms it becomes a part of the room. I refer to it as “Having a rocking chair in your childs room. They know it is there – it is a safe place – yet they pay no attention to it until they need to use it.” That it is a “SAFE” place. Truly an amazing feeling.

Mr. Haslem and his staff were wonderful to work with. Professional and courteous at all times. I look forward to working with them on my High School Project soon.

Yours in Education,

Terry D. Shaw
